Glenn Strange

an actor’s story

Glenn Strange: Headshot

I was watching an episode of MST3K featuring the film “The Mad Monster (1942)“, and although the film was a pretty bad wolf-man knock-off, I thought the actor playing the monster was good. I looked him up and was truly surprised.

Glenn Strange: The Mad Monster
His name was Glenn Strange (1899-1973), and his life and acting career are a testament to hard work and success. By all accounts, he also seemed to be a very nice guy as well.

Glenn Strange: Frankenstein
He’s got 314 credits on IMDB from 1930 to 1973, but his portrayal of The Frankenstein Monster was his most iconic. He appeared in a number of films and TV shows including “House of Frankenstein“, “House of Dracula” and “Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein“. His nickname was “Pee Wee”, but at 6′ 6″ he never needed any lifts to play Frankenstein. His image as the monster was so iconic that the studios used it in many of their promotional materials. In fact, when Boris Karloff passed away in 1969, many newspapers actually ran Glenn Strange’s picture as Frankenstein along with Karloff’s obituary.

Glenn Strange: Cowboy
His career spanned many genres from westerns to horror to comedy, but he also had been a rancher, deputy sheriff, played the fiddle and guitar, and was an avid cook.

Sometimes when you dig a bit deeper into a person’s life, you find a treasure of inspiration. Perhaps this is a fitting legacy to this very interesting man’s career and life.

Get inspired!

GoPro Hike!

GoPro Hike!

As you probably know, my wife and I exercise regularly and hike quite a bit.

We recently got a GoPro Session camera and recorded one of our weekly hikes.
The total hiking time was about an hour and a half, and we covered over 5 miles and more than 90 flights of stairs (10 feet per flight).

This all takes place in Griffith park, and if you look closely you can see the Griffith observatory and the LA skyline through the haze.

Enjoy!

Ode To A Dump

Ode To A Dump

a poem by Joe J Thomas

Once per week, come rain or shine
I make up something new
Perhaps a chicken measuring line
Or which foot goes in which shoe
Henderson is always fun
(and maybe a little crass)
For poetry there’s more than one
To fill a poet’s glass
Sometimes it’s nothing that I have in mind
I let it out with glee
Cartoons and music of different kinds
Collide in obscurity
Quantum physics or science now
They both have places here
Artwork featuring a cow
Is neither here nor there
Politics and opinions rage
Obama, Snowden, and Trump
Don’t lock them all up in a cage
The belong here in the Dump
Another thing the dump provides
Each Monday without fail
A reason to open my mind and eyes
To tell a simple tale
And so I challenge each of you
Create something for the world
It might be gold. It might be poo.
Let your freaky flag unfurl!

VO Workout

VO Workout Banner

How staying fit can help you in your voiceover career.

When most of us hear the term “VO Workout”, we imagine a group of fellow voice actors gathering to read copy and get feedback. But there’s another kind of workout you should be adding to boost your VO career.

Keeping physically fit, mentally healthy, and getting proper nutrition all contribute to our bodies, minds and spirits working at peak levels. All of these factors can affect the sound of your voice, mood of your delivery, and how you interact with other people in the biz. Breathing, core strength, mobility, relaxation – all can come from maintaining good health. Below are some of the key factors I consider every day…

Monumental Independence

Monumental Independence

On this, Independence Day for the USA, I’ve decided to post some quotes from famous monuments as an inspiration for the future…

On the plaque at The Statue of Liberty:

New Colossus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Three of the many quotes from The FDR Memorial:

“In these days of difficulty, we Americans everywhere must and shall choose the path of social justice…the path of faith, the path of hope, and the path of love toward our fellow man.”
October 2, 1932

“Men and nature must work hand in hand. The throwing out of balance of the resources of nature throws out of balance also the lives of men.”
January 24, 1935

“Among American citizens, there should be no forgotten men and no forgotten races.”
October 26, 1936

From the southeast portico of The Thomas Jefferson Memorial:

“I am not an advocate for frequent changes in laws and constitutions, but laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths discovered and manners and opinions change, with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also to keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy as a civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors.”
-Excerpted from a letter to Samuel Kercheval, July 12, 1816.

A few quotes from the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial:

“If we are to have peace on earth, our loyalties must become ecumenical rather than sectional. Our loyalties must transcend our race, our tribe, our class, and our nation; and this means we must develop a world perspective.”
(December 24, 1967, Atlanta, Georgia)

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”
(April 16, 1963, Birmingham, Alabama)

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
(February 25, 1967, Los Angeles, California)

“Every nation must now develop an overriding loyalty to mankind as a whole in order to preserve the best in their individual societies.”
(April 4, 1967, Riverside Church, Manhattan, New York)

What’s Up Joe?

What’s Up Joe?

A recent online post asked “What do you do when you’re not busy working?”

It got me thinking about my ever growing list of everything outside of VO that I’m working on. Here’s a few:

  • Spending quality time with my wife (priority one!)
  • Blogging on Joe’s Dump
  • Learning to sing my first German aria
  • Putting together a pitch reel and show bible for Live! from E.V.I.L. (Evil Villain Island Lair)
  • Writing a crime novella
  • Dealing with home improvements
  • Caring for our elderly cat, Nez
  • Listening to a backlog of audio dramas
  • Slowly cleaning out years of stuff in the garage

Plus the usual eat, sleep, hygiene, exercise, chill things.

Hmmm… can’t imagine where my time goes!

So, What’s up with you?

Ban Ki-moon Tune!

Ban Ki-moon Tune!

Even an incomplete project can be a fertile testing grounds for growing new skills and fostering creativity. Here’s just one recent example from Joe’s Dump…

Ban Ki-moon, the Secretary General of the United Nations, didn’t have a song!
I couldn’t believe nobody had made one. Seemed like a shoe-in for a viral hit 😉

So, I created one for him – a parody of Herman’s Hermits “I’m Into Something Good”:

Ban Ki-moon Tune! (Joe J Thomas)

Sometimes my initial goal gets expanded and leads to a more complicated project.
This time, I though I’d make a music video featuring a cartoon version of Ban Ki-moon!
Ambitious considering my level as an animator and the limitations of the software.

In the end, the video never came together… but I did learn some very valuable techniques for future projects:

The Nothing

The Nothing

The Nothing” is an unusual villain from the German fantasy book “The NeverEnding Story” (a film version was made in 1984)

(*** spoilers below ***)

I use the word “villain” in a loose way, as it’s more of a force of nature. In the story, it is slowly destroying Fantasia, a land of wonder, imagination, and endless variety. In the movie version, “The Nothing” is represented by an ominous storm, and by a large black wolf:
The Nothing from The NeverEnding Story

The book is not as concrete, but much more frightening in it’s portrayal. “The Nothing” represents all of the worst of humankind. Apathy, cynicism, despair, and all the darkest aspects of our nature.

In the end, it’s a boy’s imagination and willingness to believe that saves Fantasia from “The Nothing”.

The Nothing: It’s At Work On Our World

Beyond the simple story lies a chilling truth: “The Nothing” is quite real. And it’s been growing. We feed it by giving into our greed, anger, and small-mindedness. Where is it? How can we identify it? And what can be done to stop it? I’ve provided some examples below, and I’m sure once you see it too, you’ll be able to find many more…
