Political Pause

Political Pause

I need a break. It’s only until after the US Presidential election is over, but I really want to take time to focus on what’s important in my life.

So… You’re never supposed to discuss politics or religion in polite company.

But it seems like polite company is getting more difficult to find.

I’ll let you in on some of my views in the rest of this post, then I’m signing out of Joe’s Dump.
The lights will come back on in November (although I may post something if the mood strikes me).

Glenn Strange

an actor’s story

Glenn Strange: Headshot

I was watching an episode of MST3K featuring the film “The Mad Monster (1942)“, and although the film was a pretty bad wolf-man knock-off, I thought the actor playing the monster was good. I looked him up and was truly surprised.

Glenn Strange: The Mad Monster
His name was Glenn Strange (1899-1973), and his life and acting career are a testament to hard work and success. By all accounts, he also seemed to be a very nice guy as well.

Glenn Strange: Frankenstein
He’s got 314 credits on IMDB from 1930 to 1973, but his portrayal of The Frankenstein Monster was his most iconic. He appeared in a number of films and TV shows including “House of Frankenstein“, “House of Dracula” and “Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein“. His nickname was “Pee Wee”, but at 6′ 6″ he never needed any lifts to play Frankenstein. His image as the monster was so iconic that the studios used it in many of their promotional materials. In fact, when Boris Karloff passed away in 1969, many newspapers actually ran Glenn Strange’s picture as Frankenstein along with Karloff’s obituary.

Glenn Strange: Cowboy
His career spanned many genres from westerns to horror to comedy, but he also had been a rancher, deputy sheriff, played the fiddle and guitar, and was an avid cook.

Sometimes when you dig a bit deeper into a person’s life, you find a treasure of inspiration. Perhaps this is a fitting legacy to this very interesting man’s career and life.

If you’d like more information on Glenn Strange, please visit his IMDB page or Google the many articles written about him online.

Get inspired!

Monumental Independence

Monumental Independence

On this, Independence Day for the USA, I’ve decided to post some quotes from famous monuments as an inspiration for the future…

On the plaque at The Statue of Liberty:

New Colossus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Three of the many quotes from The FDR Memorial:

“In these days of difficulty, we Americans everywhere must and shall choose the path of social justice…the path of faith, the path of hope, and the path of love toward our fellow man.”
October 2, 1932

“Men and nature must work hand in hand. The throwing out of balance of the resources of nature throws out of balance also the lives of men.”
January 24, 1935

“Among American citizens, there should be no forgotten men and no forgotten races.”
October 26, 1936

From the southeast portico of The Thomas Jefferson Memorial:

“I am not an advocate for frequent changes in laws and constitutions, but laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths discovered and manners and opinions change, with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also to keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy as a civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors.”
-Excerpted from a letter to Samuel Kercheval, July 12, 1816.

A few quotes from the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial:

“If we are to have peace on earth, our loyalties must become ecumenical rather than sectional. Our loyalties must transcend our race, our tribe, our class, and our nation; and this means we must develop a world perspective.”
(December 24, 1967, Atlanta, Georgia)

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”
(April 16, 1963, Birmingham, Alabama)

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
(February 25, 1967, Los Angeles, California)

“Every nation must now develop an overriding loyalty to mankind as a whole in order to preserve the best in their individual societies.”
(April 4, 1967, Riverside Church, Manhattan, New York)

What’s Up Joe?

What’s Up Joe?

A recent online post asked “What do you do when you’re not busy working?”

It got me thinking about my ever growing list of everything outside of VO that I’m working on. Here’s a few:

  • Spending quality time with my wife (priority one!)
  • Blogging on Joe’s Dump
  • Learning to sing my first German aria
  • Putting together a pitch reel and show bible for Live! from E.V.I.L. (Evil Villain Island Lair)
  • Writing a crime novella
  • Dealing with home improvements
  • Caring for our elderly cat, Nez
  • Listening to a backlog of audio dramas
  • Slowly cleaning out years of stuff in the garage

Plus the usual eat, sleep, hygiene, exercise, chill things.

Hmmm… can’t imagine where my time goes!

So, What’s up with you?

The Nothing

The Nothing

The Nothing” is an unusual villain from the German fantasy book “The NeverEnding Story” (a film version was made in 1984)

(*** spoilers below ***)

I use the word “villain” in a loose way, as it’s more of a force of nature. In the story, it is slowly destroying Fantasia, a land of wonder, imagination, and endless variety. In the movie version, “The Nothing” is represented by an ominous storm, and by a large black wolf:
The Nothing from The NeverEnding Story

The book is not as concrete, but much more frightening in it’s portrayal. “The Nothing” represents all of the worst of humankind. Apathy, cynicism, despair, and all the darkest aspects of our nature.

In the end, it’s a boy’s imagination and willingness to believe that saves Fantasia from “The Nothing”.

The Nothing: It’s At Work On Our World

Beyond the simple story lies a chilling truth: “The Nothing” is quite real. And it’s been growing. We feed it by giving into our greed, anger, and small-mindedness. Where is it? How can we identify it? And what can be done to stop it? I’ve provided some examples below, and I’m sure once you see it too, you’ll be able to find many more…

Memorial Day

Memorial Day

Today, at 12:01 ET, I’ll be observing a moment of silence to Honor The Fallen for Memorial Day. The “#GoSilent” campaign run by IAVA.org is one of many organizations with the aim of bringing attention to veteran’s issues. They and their families deserve our respect, and our help for all they have done and continue to do.

Although I never served, my father was in WWII. I can’t even begin to imagine how that changed him. But he was the “strong silent” type. Always there for us, and I hope we were there for him as well. Thank you, Dad. And thank you to all who’ve served to protect our country, freedoms, and way of life.

Celebrity Superpower

Celebrity Superpower

In many ways, being a celebrity can be like having a superpower. It makes them larger than life. It can be used for good or for evil. People will follow them for a whole host of reasons. And, on a personal level, it can be healthy for them, or cause them harm. Or both.

It also has many parallels to the Greek Gods. They were larger versions of humans, with all the emotions, flaws and drama. Just writ bigger on the heavens.

In the end, what strikes me most about celebrity is the difficulty it must bring in leading a normal life.

Though we associate celebrity with the performing arts, many professions have celebrities. Politics, law, medicine, science, restaurants, etc.

Perhaps it’s best for us and the celebrities if we can think of them more as just human beings. They have the same needs, wants and desires. Since I’m in Los Angeles, it’s pretty common to run into a celebrity when you’re out and about. I try to respect their privacy. They deserve to have a private life… just like a secret identity.

In the wake of all the recent celebrities who have passed on, I’d like to hear your thoughts. Feel free to comment below.

Yours,
Joe

Calloused Attitude

Calloused Attitude

40+ miles. Every week.

That’s how much I walk and hike.

JoeActor FitBit Stats 2016-02

With that much mileage, you’re bound to build up some callouses. And I had some doosies. The bottoms of my feet were like leather.

Callouses have their purpose. They build up to protect your skin and the tissue beneath. But, in excess, they can cause other issues.

Calloused Attitude

The same process happens with our attitudes. Over time, and given enough exposure to the friction with others, we build up our defenses. Become resistant. Protect ourselves.

Removal by Erosion

For callouses on my feet, the process is pretty simple: buy a pumice stone or one of those rotary foot sanders, then spend a little time every day buffing down my feet.

For a calloused attitude, the process is also simple: catch yourself when you’re angry or resistant to hearing others, then remove a little of those biases every day.

Results

With most of the callouses removed from my feet, they’ve become more flexible and my balance has also improved. Of course they’re also more sensitive, but that’s the trade-off.

As for attitude, with fewer emotional callouses I’m more open to hearing others, and able to respond with less anger. I don’t have to agree, but I can disagree cordially.

How do you deal with your callouses?

Problem. Solution.

Problem Solution - Joe's Dump

Quote: Joe J Thomas
Cartoon: Gary Larson

Problem.

Sometimes when I’m feeling frustrated and it’s like I’m banging my head against the wall, the best thing I can do is…

Stop.

Take a break. Breathe. Push back from the issue. Get a wider view.

Consider.

Think about why I’m feeling anger or frustration. What’s causing it?

Identify.

Dig deep and try to find the real problem. Pull it from the depths and stare it in the face.

Source.

Sometimes the source of the issue is me. Sometimes it’s someone else. Or nobody. Or miscommunication. Or just a random event.

Solution.

Once you know what the issue is, the answer might be contained in the problem itself. Or it may take time to work out a good answer. Maybe there are no answers for some problems.

Either way…

If you can’t see the problem,
No solution is possible.
