Acting: My Theatre Roots

Share

Hello all,

Many people on the internet (yes… YOU!) have wondered “How do I get started in Voice Acting?”

The answer: ACTING!

Acting on Stage, Improv games, and Singing form the foundation of my skillset that I use daily in voice acting.

“But, Joe”, you might hypothetically say, “Where is the proof that you’ve been on stage?”

Thanks to my friends and family, I managed to pull together a short demo of a few of my past Musical Theatre productions. And now, the movie, folks!

These are just a few of the dozens of shows I was in over the years. I was fortunate to have gone to a High School that did 3 shows per year. And was near a community theatre that did 1 or 2 more. By the time I was out of school, I’d been in over a dozen shows. After high school, my day job was computer programming, but by night I did theatre. Usually 3 or 4 shows a year. That adds up over the decades.

For me, stage acting (and improv and singing), gave me all the tools I need to deliver a believable performance in voice over, as well as a large stable of characters and accents.

Now it’s your turn: Tell me what you’ve done on stage!
(or if. you haven’t – get involved with a theatre near you and have some fun!)

Cheers,
Joe (actor)

What’s Up Joe?

A recent online post asked “What do you do when you’re not busy working?”

It got me thinking about my ever growing list of everything outside of VO that I’m working on. Here’s a few:

  • Spending quality time with my wife (priority one!)
  • Blogging on Joe’s Dump
  • Learning to sing my first German aria
  • Putting together a pitch reel and show bible for Live! from E.V.I.L. (Evil Villain Island Lair)
  • Writing a crime novella
  • Dealing with home improvements
  • Caring for our elderly cat, Nez
  • Listening to a backlog of audio dramas
  • Slowly cleaning out years of stuff in the garage

Plus the usual eat, sleep, hygiene, exercise, chill things.

Hmmm… can’t imagine where my time goes!

So, What’s up with you?

First Casting

There’s a first time for everything.

Casting for Live From E.V.I.L. was a first for me.

“So, Joe… How did it go?”

Wow! It was tough for a variety of reasons.

There were a lot of really good auditions. I’d asked for folks to come up with their own original character that would fit in at a party on EVIL Island, then voice a few lines. It was an opportunity to be really creative, and believe me, creativity is alive and rampant in Voice Acting!

Silent Computer

The time had come to have “The Talk” with my current computer system:

I don’t know how to say this, so I’ll just come out and say it: I’ve outgrown you.
You’ve gotten too slow and noisy, and I feel I can no longer rely on you.
Really… it’s not you… no, wait… it is you!
Maybe it’s best we just go our own ways.

And so, the hunt for a new computer began!

Technology Rising, Quality Sinking

Technology Sinking Quality Ship

Technology…
It’s here to help.
It’s here to save us.
To make things better.

But as the technology becomes more and more prevalent in our daily lives, the quality of many industries, products and even people are on the decline.

It’s this relationship between the rise of technology and the sinking level of quality that this article will explore.

Maybe We Ain’t Us

— a poem by Joe J Thomas —

I’m not who you think I am.
And neither are you.
As years pass, some cells have died.
Others take their place.
Atom by atom.
New memories forged and old ones slip away.
Like a magic trick performed by a great wizard.
There is misdirection and slight of hand involved. Continue reading
